Applications for the MIF Research Fellowships 2024-25 are now available for international from any part of the world. Students who want to pursue their post-doctoral degree in Japan can apply for this fellowship program. The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) aims to contribute to the future by connecting people and making bridges between Japan and the world. Note: Medical field applicants are given first priority. But other Majors holders also can apply)

Total No of Fellowship

A total 15 number of fellowships are provided each year.

Financial Benefits

• Allowance for research and stay 
• An amount of ¥220,000/month is provided for tuition payment, miscellaneous living expenses, and expenses for research materials.
• Insurance
• Air transportation
• Start-up Fund upon arrival of ¥120,000– to cover the initial costs to start new research stay in Japan.

Eligibility Criteria for MIF Scholarship

• Candidates must have obtained an Invitation letter from the host institutions in Japan.
• Must hold a PH.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as having an equivalent academic qualification.
• At the time of the application when documents are submitted applicants must be at the age of 49 years old or younger.
• Must be proficient in the English or Japanese languages.
• Applicants should not have stayed in Japan before. (Except for short-term stay. E.g. conferences, sightseeing)
• Applicants must be employed in their home countries and return to their home countries upon completion of the MIF Fellowship period.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

Applicants should download the notification from the MIF website and print the application form in PDF format or MS Word file. Or should obtain the current issue of the Fellowship Announcement from MIF

MIF cannot consider requests for waiver of eligibility requirements and other conditions, as stated in the Fellowship announcement, and will not accommodate such requests.

The application must be submitted by POST from the applicant’s home country. 

Note: The MIF accepts only those applications submitted by POST. Electronically or via facsimile submitted applications will be unacceptable.
