What is an HBCU : HBCUs are a source of pride and success for African Americans and the rest of the country as a whole. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, says that an HBCU is “any historically black college or university that was founded before 1964 and whose main goal was and is the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognised accrediting agency
Association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority on the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable efforts to improve the quality of training offered.” HBCUs give all students, no matter what race they are, a chance to improve their skills and talents. These schools teach young people how to be entrepreneurs and work in the public and private sectors in the United States and around the world.
